These Hairbands were made from used condomsand threads. That was so
disgusting, I would not want to use them!!

BEIJING - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern
China , threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were
originally meant to prevent, state media reported
Tuesday

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber
hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan
and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper
said.
‘These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well …
threatening the health of local people,’ it said.
Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and
viruses, it said.
‘People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if
they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their
hair into plaits or buns,’ the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave
only his surname, Dong, as saying.
A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 sen (three cents),
much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity,
the paper said.
A government official was quoted as saying
recycling condoms was illegal.
China ’s manufacturing industry has been repeatedly tarnished this year by
a string of scandals involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both
domestic and foreign markets.
In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at
playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems.

David Cook won as Season 7 of American Idol ends

May 22, 2008 – 3:43 pm

Rocker David Cook won the coveted title of “American Idol” on Wednesday, dealing an unexpected but decisive defeat to a silken-voiced teenager, also named David, on the most popular U.S. television show.

Cook, 25, who was tending bar and playing in a band before he auditioned for the singing competition, stood back to applaud rival David Archuleta, 17, and then bent over crying after host Ryan Seacrest said he had won by 12 million votes.

“This is amazing. Thank you,” said the Blue Springs, Missouri, native, who in addition to being crowned this year’s “Idol” will receive a recording contract.

In its seventh season, “American Idol” has grown from a cheesy summer talent show into a pop culture phenomenon that draws millions of viewers to News Corp’s Fox network at least twice a week.

It has produced mega-stars from both winners and losers, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry

This season, however, average audiences on the show have slipped from just over 30 million viewers last year to roughly 28 million this year, the second straight year of declines.

Nevertheless, the dueling Davids garnered a record 97.5 million votes between them, smashing the previous record by 23 million. The contest was decided by a telephone and text-messaging vote in which Cook received 56 percent to Archuleta’s 44 percent.

Throughout this year’s months-long competition, Cook wowed both the show’s viewers and judges with updated, rock versions of pop classics like Lionel Richie’s “Hello” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

On Tuesday night’s show, however, the judges said the babyfaced Archuleta had outperformed Cook with his pitch-perfect renditions of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

Acid-tongued judge Simon Cowell criticized Cook for choosing a song he had never performed before during his last chance to woo voters and called the evening “a knockout” by Archuleta. Cook sang Collective Soul’s “The World I Know” instead of reprising one of his best-loved performances of the season, as Archuleta did with “Imagine.”

SIMON APOLOGIZES

But just before Seacrest announced the results on Wednesday, Cowell—in an unusual move for him—apologized for his comments from the previous evening.

“I went back home to watch it, it wasn’t quite so clear cut as we called it,” Cowell said, adding to Cook: “I will take this opportunity to apologize because I think I was verging on disrespectful with you. I don’t think you deserved that.”

Backstage, Cook said he didn’t think Cowell’s comments warranted an apology, though he was happy to receive it.

“An apology from Simon is a pretty rare gem,” he said, adding that he had not expected to win the “Idol” title.

Also backstage, a giddy Archuleta was effusive in his praise of Cook.

“He’s like my big brother,” Archuleta said. “I have looked up to him since the beginning of this. I just feel so honored to be standing next to Cook.”

About 100,000 people auditioned for this year’s “American Idol,” which puts contestants through auditions and performances that showcase musical genres from musical theater to country to pop.

“Idol” has also become a coveted forum for established artists to be seen. Wednesday night’s star-studded show at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles included performances by George Michael, Donna Summer, Seal, Underwood and Bryan Adams

The “Davids” duel is the first time two male contestants have competed for the “Idol” title since Ruben Studdard defeated Clay Aiken in the show’s second season in 2003.

However, a showdown between the two was widely anticipated as neither ever landed among the show’s bottom three vote-getters on the weekly broadcasts in which contestants are whittled down before one is sent home.

Under Cowell’s deal with Fox, he has the rights to sign the winning singer and runner-up from each “Idol” contest to a recording contract with his label, Sony BMG, a partnership between Sony Corp and Bertelsmann.

Royal Caribbean bans complaining couple for life

May 20, 2008 – 12:49 pm

Are you one of those people who complains about every little thing that goes wrong on a cruise? Better be careful, or you just might find yourself banned from your favorite ships.

That’s the takeaway from a fascinating story today at expertcruiser.com about a Cleveland couple that apparently complained just a little too much about their frequent trips with Royal Caribbean. The site says the fed-up line recently told them not to come back. Ever.

The site says that while Brenda and Gerald Moran liked sailing on Royal Caribbean, they had a habit of documenting all sorts of problems big and small that occurred during their cruises, from a birthday greeting delivered to the wrong cabin to a toilet malfunction that spilled sewage into their bathroom. And they weren’t shy about talking about the problems in online cruise forums.

At first, Royal Caribbean tried to make nice by offering the couple a discount on a future cruise and other perks. But after the Morans kept posting at online site cruisecritic.com about their complaints—and the compensation that they were getting out of Royal Caribbean by complaining—the line changed its tune, says expertcruiser.com. The site says the Morans received a phone call from a Royal Caribbean executive and then an official letter informing them they were banned from the line forever.

A spokesman for Royal Caribbean tells expertcruiser.com that the couple had complained about all but one of six cruises with the company since 2004. “In a small number of cases we agreed and compensated them appropriately. In most cases, however, we disagreed,” the spokesman told the site. “Having concluded that we are unable to meet the expectations of the Morans, we have told them that they would be best served by sailing with another company.”

The Morans, meanwhile, say they’re now sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line.

Cruise Loggers, head on over to expertcruiser.com to read the full story, and then come back here to discuss it in the comment area below. Do you think Royal Caribbean was justified in banning the couple from its ships?

Ashlee Simspon and Pete Wentz… Newly Wed?

May 18, 2008 – 12:42 pm

Ashlee Simpson got her fairy tale wedding to Pete Wentz on Saturday complete with an “Alice in Wonderland” themed reception at her parents’ Los Angeles area home, according to People magazine.

Simpson, 23, and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, 28, exchanged vows in front of 150 people at her parent’s home in Encino, a bedroom community in the San Fernando Valley. Joe Simpson, her father, performed the non-denomination ceremony and sister Jessica was the maid of honor, the magazine said.

The bride wore a wedding dress by Monique Lhuillier and a diamond necklace and earrings by Neil Lane, the magazine said. The reception featured a wedding cake piled high with a top hat, tea pot, stop watch and a pot of flowers on top, People said.

A flurry of arrangements on Saturday afternoon just outside the guarded gates of the Simpson’s property indicated that the pop singer’s wedding to Wentz was imminent.

White shuttle vans with deeply tinted windows were streaming through the gates, as were several delivery vehicles, including some marked as belonging to celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck.

Drivers of a few expensive cars who arrived at the guard tower were told to park elsewhere and take a shuttle. One was a well-dressed woman who arrived in an Audi packed with red boxes.

And of course, the paparazzi had been gathering before 3 p.m., lingering outside the property. Aerial photos posted online Friday on several celebrity Web sites purportedly showed an outcropping of large white party tents.

Simpson and Wentz began dating in fall 2006 and announced their engagement April 9. Rumors that Simpson is pregnant soon followed, but the couple has denied that they are expecting a child.

Simpson, a singer, songwriter and actress, is the younger sister of pop star Jessica Simpson. Ashlee Simpson’s latest album, “Bittersweet World,” was released last month. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in its first week, and tracks have logged more than 19 million plays on her MySpace page.

American Idol: The Battle of the Davids

American Idol Season 7 Top 2

May 15, 2008 – 3:58 pm

It’ll be David vs. David. Syesha Mercado was voted off “American Idol” Wednesday night, paving the way for the expected showdown between David Archuleta and David Cook.

Mercado, a 21-year-old actress from Sarasota, Fla., was the last woman standing on the top-rated Fox contest. The big-voiced belter surpassed a more accomplished singer (Carly Smithson), a fan favorite (Brooke White) and a statuesque country crooner (Kristy Lee Cook).

While other contestants floundered, Mercado challenged herself with ambitious song choices like Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” She showed more personality—and lots of leg—while swiveling her hips in a glittery gold minidress for a rendition of “Proud Mary.” She cried when Paula Abdul gave her a standing ovation last week.

Abdul held the sugar on Tuesday’s performance show, telling Mercado that she thought her performance of “Hit Me Up” wasn’t “good enough to get into the finals.”

With Mercado out of the way, “Idol” can now fully hype the David vs. David matchup.

There’s Archuleta, the 17-year-old singing prodigy from Murray, Utah, with the overly involved stage dad. And there’s Cook, the 25-year-old former bartender from Blue Springs, Mo., with an emo edge that the angelic Arculeta lacks.

Who will snag the title next Wednesday?

One thing is for sure: His name will be David.
